First Home Buyer — General Information for First-Home Buyers

Provided by Queen City Law NZ Limited | Last updated: 3 September 2026

1. What this platform is

First Home Buyer is a place where you can find general information to help you buy your first home — things like how the buying process works, what you need to know about KiwiSaver first-home withdrawals, and details of developments that may interest you.

It’s a starting point to help you understand the basics. It’s not a substitute for getting your own advice before you make any decisions.

2. This is general information, not advice

Everything on this website is general information only. It is not:

  • legal advice;

  • financial, tax, or investment advice; or

  • advice about your specific situation.

Information may be simplified to make it easier to understand, and it may not always be fully up to date. Before you buy a property, sign anything, or use your KiwiSaver, please get your own advice from a lawyer, financial adviser, mortgage broker, or accountant.

3. Using this website doesn’t make us your lawyer

Reading this website or sending us an enquiry does not make us your lawyer. We only become your lawyer once we’ve expressly agreed to act for you.

If you’d like us to act for you on your conveyancing (the legal work of settling your purchase), we first need to run a conflict check. If we already act for the other party to your purchase (for example, the developer or vendor) we will be conflicted out and won’t be able to act for you on that transaction. If this applies to you, we’ll let you know so you can instruct another lawyer instead.

4. We don’t guarantee the information is accurate or complete

We take care with the information on this website, but we can’t guarantee it is accurate, complete, or up to date — including information that comes from other people, like developers or government agencies. Always double-check anything important, especially details about a specific development, before relying on it.

5. We’re not liable for how you use this website

To the extent the law allows, we’re not liable for any loss or damage from your use of, or reliance on, this website.

This doesn’t affect any rights you have that can’t legally be excluded, such as under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986.

6. Links to other websites

This website may link to other websites, such as a developer’s website or a KiwiSaver provider. We’re not responsible for the content of those websites, and a link doesn’t mean we endorse them.

7. Governing jurisdiction

This website is written for, and governed by, the laws of New Zealand, and is meant for people accessing it from within New Zealand. We make no claim that its content satisfies the legal requirements of any other country.

8. Viruses and online security

We keep our security and antivirus measures up to date, but we can't promise this website is always free of viruses, malware, spyware, ransomware, or similar threats that might affect your device or data.

9. Site uptime

We work to keep this website up and running, but can't promise it will be available without interruption. We take no responsibility for loss arising from the site being offline, whether that's for scheduled maintenance or for technical reasons beyond our control.

10. Ownership of content

You're welcome to view and download content for your own personal use, or for commercial use we've specifically agreed to. Any trademarks shown on the site belong to us or are used with the owner's consent. Where content on this site is marked as belonging to someone else, you'll need to get that party's own permission before copying or reusing it.

We’re here to help.

No question is too small when you're buying your first home.
